Spearman is the seat of Hansford County, home also to the towns of Gruver, Morse, and Oslo, with a combined population of more than 5,000 people. The Texas Legislature formed Hansford County in 1876 and it benefited greatly from the arrival, in 1919, of the North Texas and Santa Fe Railway. By the ‘20s, an influx of farmers set in motion the agricultural and ranching economy. Later, in 1937, oil was discovered in Hansford County, leading to a boom in natural resources. Today, the government is comprised of several county offices and a district court.
